I have never planted irises in my yard but somehow and someway I have had a bunch of volunteer plants find their way into my gardens. Like most perennials, they come back year after year, but there is something about these particular flowers that seem to have more resilience than the ones around them. In the dead of winter where those irises come up year after year it is barren. I mean, nothing. No sign of life. And yet, right on cue, they pop their green out of the ground and bloom every spring. I love the consistency of these friends I never initially invited. It’s as if they say, “hello! Here I am again!” to remind me that the seemingly dead things still are very much alive. That just like the blue and purple irises in my yard every spring, I too, can begin again.
